Why the Sibenik coast is one of the best places in Europe to put panels on a roof

The stretch from Vodice through Sibenik down to Rogoznica gets a level of solar irradiation that installers in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands simply do not have to work with. On our own systems in the wider Zadar and Sibenik area we measure around 1,200 to 1,250 kWh per installed kWp per year. The same panels on a roof near Munich give roughly 1,000, near Hamburg closer to 900.

The second, less obvious advantage is timing. Production peaks in June, July and August, which on this coast is exactly when consumption peaks too: air conditioning running day and night, pool pumps, water heaters, and in rental properties a full house of guests. Solar output and the electricity bill line up almost perfectly, which is not the case for a permanently occupied house in northern Europe where the peak demand is in dark winter months.

What is different about Sibenik-area properties

Holiday rentals dominate

In Vodice, Tribunj, Murter, Betina, Jezera, Primosten and Rogoznica a very large share of houses is rented to guests in summer. Those properties have the highest electricity bills on the coast, and the strongest case for solar we ever calculate. A 20 kWp system on a villa with a pool and four air conditioners frequently covers most of the summer bill.

Wind and salt

The bura and the exposed position of Murter, Tribunj and Rogoznica mean the mounting has to be dimensioned for real wind loads rather than a central European standard, and the metalwork has to survive salt air. We use anodised profiles and A4 stainless fasteners near the sea and calculate anchor spacing for the actual location.

Protected historic areas

The old core of Sibenik, the area around the cathedral and the protected zones of Skradin and Primosten restrict what may be visible from public space. Outside those zones there is no restriction. We check the status of your address before anyone pays for a design.

Inland and island grid

Behind the coast, towards Skradin, Drnis and the Krka area, and on Murter and the Sibenik islands, the distribution network is thinner. That changes what the grid will accept and often makes a hybrid inverter with storage the sensible technical answer, not an upsell.

Who actually does the work

SOENSO is a Croatian company based in Skabrnja, between Zadar and Benkovac, about fifty minutes from Sibenik. We design, install, commission and service; we do not subcontract the installation to a crew you never meet.

The owner works as a field unit manager at HEP ODS, the Croatian distribution system operator, responsible for grid maintenance and new customer connections, and holds the separate licences to design and install photovoltaic systems. For a foreign owner this matters for one specific reason: the grid connection procedure is the part of a Croatian solar project that goes wrong, gets returned for missing documents, and drags on for months. It is the part we know from the inside.

How much does a solar system cost in the Sibenik area?

A 10 kWp system on a normal family house starts at roughly 11,500 EUR turnkey, 5 kWp at roughly 6,500 EUR, and 20 kWp for a villa with a pool at roughly 22,000 EUR. A 10 kWh battery adds roughly 5,000 EUR. We quote a fixed price after a survey.

Is solar worth it for a house I rent out in summer?

This is the strongest case there is. Rental properties consume most of their electricity in July and August, which is exactly when a roof on this coast produces most. Do you work on Murter and the Sibenik islands?

Yes, including Murter, Betina, Jezera, Tisno, Zlarin, Prvic and Kaprije. Island work takes a little longer and the weaker grid usually makes a hybrid system the better choice.

Can I install panels on a stone house in a protected zone?

Inside a protected historic zone, panels visible from public space normally require conservation approval and are often refused. There are workarounds, such as a ground mounted array behind a wall or panels on an outbuilding, but they must be checked case by case. Send us the address first.
